    West Africa —Nigeria in particular— is one of the
top five palm oil producers in the world. Yet countries across the continent still import palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia. Isn't that shocking?

It is. Several major problems are holding back palm oil yields across the continent, and they need to be tackled urgently if West Africa is to reclaim its place as a leading force in global agriculture.

The Problems

1. Economic and Production Deficits

Low Oil Extraction Rates (OER) Primitive, small-scale mills often achieve an oil extraction rate of just 60%, leaving large amounts of oil trapped in the fiber and nuts. This represents significant lost revenue compared to modern mills in regions like Southeast Asia, where extraction rates exceed 90%.

Massive Post-Harvest Losses Poor storage, long delays between harvesting and processing, and inadequate transportation infrastructure cause large quantities of palm fruit to rot before they can be processed.

Substandard Quality Inefficient processing often produces oil with high levels of free fatty acids, making it unsuitable for the lucrative international market and limiting its value domestically.

2. Health Hazards

Pollution and Waste Small-scale processing generates large amounts of untreated waste, including palm oil mill effluent and fibrous biomass. Improper discharge of these byproducts into waterways, streets, and soil increases toxicity in surrounding communities.

3. Socio-Economic Hardship for Smallholders

Because local processors cannot extract oil at scale, both farmers and laborers are left with low incomes — a hardship that ripples through the entire local economy.

The Solutions

If the continent is to move forward, palm oil processing technology must be transformed. Here's how:

1. Mechanized Processing Growing up in the village, I remember the manual method of pounding and washing palm fruit — a process still used across much of West Africa today. It consistently results in low oil extraction and significant daily wastage across the continent. An integrated milling setup using motorized screw or hydraulic presses dramatically increases extraction rates and overall oil yield.

2. Improved Sterilization and Digestion Mechanized sterilizers and digesters destroy degrading enzymes and properly condition the fruit before pressing, limiting the build-up of free fatty acids.

3. Faster Processing Times Processing fresh fruit bunches within 24–48 hours of harvest minimizes spoilage, since prolonged delays significantly increase fruit degradation.

4. Waste Utilization By-products like palm fiber and empty fruit bunches can be converted into biomass energy or organic compost. Cracked shells can also be processed through mechanized kernel crackers to yield valuable palm kernel oil.

Conclusion

By applying these methods, West Africa — one of the historic homes of palm oil — can end its reliance on imports and dramatically raise extraction yields. The technology and the knowledge exist. What's needed now is action.
